Accessibility Audits

Why Accessible?

Inclusivity at its core.

In New Zealand, nearly one in five people live with a disability. For them, navigating a website that isn’t built with their needs in mind can be frustrating, difficult, or simply impossible.

While for government agencies, meeting the WCAG ‘AA’ standard is a legal requirement, many businesses and organisations see accessibility as a technical chore or an extra cost.

But for some of our clients, creating an accessible digital experience is no longer just a nice-to-have.

Accessibility doesn’t have to mean compromising on design or functionality. It simply means designing thoughtfully, so your site works better for everyone.

Good accessibility practices also tend to be good SEO practices, and search engines like Google value accessibility a lot; you’ll see an accessibility score right alongside your speed scores on Pagespeed Insights.

So what makes a website 'accessible'?

Accessibility is about making sure your site doesn’t exclude people who interact with it in different ways, or make their experience unnecessarily difficult.

For example:

  • People with vision issues may rely on screen readers that navigate your site element by element, link by link, reading out content aloud.
  • Others may have colour vision disabilities, making some text unreadable if its colour contrast with its background is too low
  • Some visitors may not use a mouse or touchscreen at all, instead navigating via keyboard or voice commands.

By keeping these kinds of accessibility issues in mind at design and build time, we can make choices which benefit all users, not just those with specific access needs.
